Notice to Parents About Proposed Fee
January 20, 2012

Dear Cal Poly Parent:

Over the last few years, the State of California has significantly reduced its support of public higher education. In fact, for Cal Poly, the state provided $150 million just four years ago; this year, we are receiving $84 million, a 43 percent reduction in state support.

With this in mind, we’re asking students to participate in an advisory process about a proposed fee that is designed to provide additional classes, additional advising and other support to help ensure the success of your student.

You can review the information we are providing to your student about this fee by visiting the Cal Poly Student Affairs website.

The fee would be $260 per quarter to be phased in over a three-year period -- $160 per quarter beginning Fall 2012, $210 per quarter beginning Fall 2013 and $260 per quarter beginning Fall 2014.

Cal Poly has a longstanding process for consulting with students about proposed fee increases, and we are using that process again. A series of forums will be held for students starting next week to provide information about the fee increase. All registered students will then be able to participate in an electronic advisory referendum on Feb. 29.

Please encourage your student to participate in this advisory process.

It’s important to note that recent tuition increases, even including the proposed fee, will not fully offset the cutbacks in state funding. Cal Poly will continue to work to find savings in other non-academic areas, just as we have done during the past decade of difficult budgets.

If you have questions, please contact calpolyparent@calpoly.edu, and we will follow up quickly to provide you an answer.

Sincerely,

Preston Allen
Interim Vice President for Student Affairs
California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
